Thieves are supposedly employing auctioneer website eBay to sell stolen vehicles for the purposes of the identity of a legitimate auto, the BBC has obtained .

Con artists- dubbed" scum of the earth" by one prey- have scammed eBay buyers out of thousands of pounds .
At least three vehicles in Greater Manchester were involved in the brand-new con.
One victim, a retired police officer, was conned out of PS17, 000 buying a Mercedes from a dealer in Rochdale .

Former copper Graham Murray reported the accident to the police, but supposes no action has been taken. The wrongdoers have still not been caught .

An eBay spokesman confirmed to the BBC that the accounts in question had been closed down and added:" Cash on collect is very unusual and we were able to query buyers to always compensate via the platform when purchasing ."
A Greater Manchester Police representative replied:" When "weve received" a report of any happen, we assess the immediate threat, distres and hazard to the public and allocate men and resources accordingly .
